Images From the Land Where Anything is Possible

Pictures of crazy, unbelievable and awesome stuff that happens in Santo Domingo. Some of the time, accompanied by a semi interesting story.

A Mixture of Old and New Technologies

I took this pictures on a not so recent visit to a place with not so fond memories… my old college. I have a friend who works in one of the library’s departments.

The main computer that they use for their daily work is an old Compaq Armada, which can’t even hold it’s monitor open. So what does this brilliant, future engineer devise? Simple, he uses his portable dvd player to hold the screen and prevent it from falling.

I’ve heard of theories on synergies and bridging the technological divide between different generations, but this is pushing it a bit.

A Walk In The Clouds

Humans have always felt the urge to soar through the skies. From the guy from greek mythology who’s name I can’t remember. You know the dude that made a couple of giant wings, strapped it to his back and flew. He made a couple for his son as well. Yet arrogance got the best of his son. He flew too close to the sun, and died as a result. I forget the rest of the story, but it doesn’t seem like a happy ending.

You got the Italian dude did everything from mathematics, painting, philosophy, anatomy, sculpture, and in his spare time made designs of all sorts of flying contraptions. Sadly he did not have the tools, or time to materialize his inventions. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if he had a modern computer, work shop and a small team of moren-o-matics.

The dude that took a pie plate, put it upside down, and threw it at the other dude. Still a very fun and calorie burning game!

The two dudes that actually made the first plane and had the first recorded flight. And there was another dude who said he did it first. Can’t we all just get along?

As many of you I have also felt the fascination with the sky ever since I can remember (which isn’t too far back anyway). I felt like a little kid in a candy store in my last flight. I got the rare occasion to sit next to the window during the evening. Perfect timing to gaze and wonder. Sadly my camera isn’t worth it’s weight so you really don’t have a detail of what I was looking at. Take it or leave it.

Tropical Goodness

I’m a bad photographer with a crappy camera. None the less, every couple of hundred pictures, there are 2 or 3 that really catch my eye. Of course that has to be taken with a grain of salt since, sadly, humans aren’t very good judges of their own work. In any case, here are my favorite “tropical” pictures. Enjoy.

Flying V-Dub

DR never ceases to surprise me. I go for just one week, and I stumble on the street with material. One of the reasons I wish I could go back to live there is just to keep on updating this site. Even if it is for my own amusement and retrospect. I am more than sure that the 3 readers I had are long gone now.

I really don’t know how to describe this one. I saw it on the street and my first impression was to take a couple of pictures of it. I don’t know if it runs. I will probably assume it can’t fly. Looks awesome though. Dominican ingenuity at it’s best!

The Motor-Bi-Cycle Part II

This is an update on a creation of a friend of mine. I showed the work before in a previous post.

Progress is being made. Just hope the next pictures I post on this series aren’t from his funeral.

[UPDATE]

The creator of the “vehicle” was interviewed by one of the biggest television networks in the Dominican Republic. A piece on the creation and the creator will be shown on national (Dominican) television. I’ll try to get a recording an put it put here in the future.
